Before you cut out any garment, I highly recommend that you head over to the Sewing Pattern review website and read most of the reviews devoted to the pattern you are about to make. There is nothing like learning from the people who have gone before you.
Before I cut out any garment, I highly recommend that I follow my own advice.
Now I love how this Hangout Hoodie by the Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop turned out and I think that is largely due to the colour combination.
I do like how the pattern goes up to size 10 and you can make it for either gender and lengthen it for a dress if you desire. You can make it with long or short sleeves and the kangaroo pocket is also optional. I made the size eight for K who turns 8 in December.
I made the mistake of letting my younger son model it and he wasn't keen to hand it over to K. J's verdict was that he loved the front pocket but wondered what the button was for. Suprisingly, K asked the same thing when he tried it on!
I wish though, as highlighted in some of the pattern reviews, that I had lined the hood. I hate seeing the inside stitching when the hood isn't being used, which is most of the time! It would be great if the pattern designer included the lining as an optional extra in the instructions and supplies. Adding a contrast colour as the hood lining would really finish off the design nicely.
I also found the neck ribbing at the front a bit tricky to sew in. In the end I ignored the photo in the instructions and sewed it up how I thought it would work.
I love the fabric. It came from Korea through a Facebook group. I ordered a mixed lot of boy fabric and there were some really great designs in the surprise bundle. It seems good quality so I will see how it ends up wearing.
I'm not sure if I'll try this pattern again. I think it would work better with lightweight jersey fabric as a t-shirt rather than a pullover. I think next time for K,I would make a size 10. The size 8 is a bit snug for him, I think it is because it is a fleecy fabric which is thicker than a t-shirt type fabric. It will only get one season for him before handed down to his brother. It is very cute though and I will try to forget that my boys are wearing fast food!
