This shopping centre wasn't far from our apartment and we took the monorail (just one stop).

We checked out the indoor archery centre but our boys were too young to try.

We then went up to the top floor to look at the indoor roller coaster and amusement centre. Unfortunately you could only
buy an all day pass for 130 rgt each so that was a bit disappointing. We
had a look around the rest of the shopping centre but there was no inspiring shopping (mostly independent
stores, a Borders and electronics) and we were all tired.

Dinner was at Subway and we grabbed some groceries including carrots from Australia! The best part of the evening was the Grand Musical Staircase. Apparently it cost $1.5m rm and took 13 weeks to build. The landing area of the staircase had liquid panels that produced ripples with every footstep. That was pretty cool!
This time we tried banana roti. There were a few taxis parked outside so we took one into the city so we could catch a bus around to the Central Market area.

The buses, like the trains, are clean and modern although you are bombarded with video clips and ads on the tv screens. I suppose at least it is entertaining! Despite my prior research, we hopped on the wrong bus (there are circle buses free for going around the city centre) and ended up being directed to get a train to Central Market. Instead, we headed back to the KL park area around the fountains for a little play. The boys had their swimming gear for a swim (it was so humid!) but the pool area was closed.

Then we headed back to the train to find our way to Central Market. Central Market is basically a collection of souvenir shops aimed at tourists. They are a bit more pricer than outdoor markets but it is tidier and airconditioned (and less touting). We had a look around and then ended up at another fish spa as Mr J had been pestering all morning. This one had bigger fish so 15 minutes was enough to cool off and relax our feet after all the walking. The boys were not so keen on this fish spa as the fish were almost three times the size as the other ones.

Notice how the fish were flocking to Brett's feet.

We then headed over to Chinatown to find somewhere for lunch. The boys didn't like the markets with the stall holders quite vocal and a bit pushy in trying to get them into their shop. It was not my favourite place and the boys found it confronting and confusing. We did see chestnuts roasting but didn't buy any.

This is where we purchased some t-shirts for our nephew. Mr J was the star of the store and this shop assistant asked for a photo with him.

We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant (being that we were in Chinatown) which was OK but I has the worst MSG dreams that night. We went into one of the more expensive (in KL terms) restaurants to enjoy the air conditioning Then it was time to head back to the apartment for a rest and swim.
It wasn't easy to work out how to get to it as the website is not very detailed.

We were so blessed by our Air BnB host, Su Yi, who lives in Shah Alam, and offered to pick us up from a nearby train station and drive us to I-City. Su Yi works for a major electronics company, also located in Shah Alam.

From our apartment, we had to go back into KL Sentral and then catch a train, and a drive to the location. This meant we didn't get to I-City until the early evening which was OK because we were going mainly to see the night lights. We had a little rest and swim in the afternoon because we knew it was going to be a late night.

After grabbing something to eat at the park, we decided to head into Snowalk. Inside was a below 5 degrees celcius Artic environment with ice sculptures and rides – the biggest in Malaysia.
Inside we found igloos, ice houses, slides, a mini-bobsled run, snowmen, ice penguins,
a bar made of ice (no alcohol unfortunately), various ice sculptures and LED lights.

We had to rug up in hire jackets while it was boiling hot outside! Our hands were still cold though, gloves would have been great! There were a couple of small toboggan rides but our boys were a bit young for them and Kaiden was too scared.
Outside, there was an area of amusement rides. You needed to pay a small fee for a ride card and then charge it up with money. We didn't spend alot of time on rides and they were quite expensive for what they were.

There were a couple of other attractions in the park but we were running out of time and it was getting late.

We stepped over to the main light area and saw an amazing field of digital trees, animals and flowers. After looking around for a little while and realising it was now 9.30pm, we sent Su-Yi a text as agreed and as she had just finished her dinner with friends she offered to drive us back to the apartment. This was an amazing offer given the distance (about 30 mins drive) and we are so appreciative of her hospitality. She asked if we wanted to stop at a supermarket so we could buy groceries (which we declined though but so grateful for the offer).

As we were driving back, we went through a few tolls. Su Yi used a hand held device which she kept in the side panel of her door. She explained how they don't have the toll reader on their windscreen as when you are stopped at lights or parked, people smash the windscreen to steal the reader. Her next story was about how her Mum had her handbag stolen from her passenger side seat when she was waiting at lights. I held my bag extra tight and felt so grateful for the safety we enjoy in Australia!
Tips
*Take your own food or eat before you go! There are a limited number of food outlets and are busy at peak times. There is a small supermarket to buy snacks, drinks and ice-creams.

*Try not to combine I-City with a major day outing (like we did with Batu Caves) as there is a little bit of walking around and i-City is a late night activity. All up it was a big day.

*Best way to get there? Not sure. If you don't have your own transport, I would hire a driver and have them wait. Getting there would be easy (train and then heaps of taxis at the train station) but getting home would be more difficult. I didn't see any taxis at the park. It would make it an expensive evening out. I'm not sure if it would be worth it then.

*Spend a bit longer that what we did if you go (6pm to 9.30pm) but this is not an all day activity. It also definitely for families/children and please don't expect this to be like MovieWorld as it is very basic in comparison. The main highlight was the field of lights.
Batu Caves is a limestone hill that has a series of caves and cave temples in the Gombak district, 13 kilometres (8 mi) north of Kuala Lumpur. The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan.

The limestone forming Batu Caves is said to be around 400 million years
old. Some of the cave entrances were used as shelters by the indigenous
Temuan people (a tribe of Orang Asli).

Rising almost 100 m above the ground, the Batu Caves temple complex
consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest,
referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a very high ceiling
and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, visitors must climb a
steep flight of 272 steps.

Thanks Wikipedia for the explanation!

Following recommendations online, we headed off early as it was getting very hot and humid during the day. Our AirBnB host, Su-Yi, helped us with directions on how to get there using the train.

We took the monorail into the city and walk to KL Sentral (will be so good when they finish the undercover walkway linking the two stations as it was like walking through a building site). We then caught the train to Batu Caves. The train was cheap, modern and clean. There was even a carriage just for women! It took about 40 minutes through the suburbs to reach the Batu train station and cost about 8 rgt for our family. That is just below $3 AUS, if only our public transport was so cheap!

At the base of the caves, there was this huge monkey statue. You will see me wear this dress ALOT on these holidays, it was great wash and wear and so cool in the humid weather.

We climbed all these stairs.

And saw this view from the top.

The best part of the visit for the boys was the monkeys
(and especially the monkey bottoms). There were heaps of monkeys
watching tourists as they climbed the stairs. The monkeys were always looking around and picking up
scraps of paper to check for food.I was a bit worried one was going to pounce on us or grab our bag but we had no food in sight so there was no attempt. One of the monkeys had a baby on her back which was interesting to see.

We climbed the stairs and looked inside the main cave. There
was a few ornate temples and statues inside.

It did stink of bat poo.

At the base of the caves, J enjoyed feeding the pigeons and a lady
shared her pigeon food with him to throw to the birds. This was the
beginning of J's celebrity status - with his blond hair he was quite
popular for photos. We didn't see many Australians around KL.

After cool drink and ice-cream we then headed back to our apartment for a swim and rest before our trip to Night City.

Tips
* Head out to Batu Caves early. We arrived at the caves at 9.30am and it was already getting hot and humid.

*Take lots of water although there are shops at the base of the caves and markets to buy sweets, fruit and ice-creams.

*The train is easy, cheap and you get to see more of the city on your journey out to the caves. You can take a tour or hire a guide but if you have the time, take the train and save your $$. For kids, it is another experience to add into their holiday memories.

*Bananas from the stalls at the base of the caves make a quick and easy snack.

*If you are into selfies, here is an idea for you. It is a bit hard to see in the photo but she has her phone attached on the end of a golf club.

The Petronas Twin Towers are impressive buildings and the stand-out piece of modern architecture in KL. We viewed the towers from the ground and didn't bother buying tickets to go for a tour of the skybridge and observation desk. Guards kept people out of the fountains and were quick to whistle at J who thought it would be fun to run through the shallow water despite our yelling. Brett was approached a couple of times with 'bargains' - watches and a mobile phone.

Following a stroll through the upmarket shopping centre (including a Kate Spade handbag shop) we walked around to the aquarium.

The aquarium was busy but manageable and we saw quite a few animals not here in Australia - piranhas, tarantulas and funny water rats who were gnawing on wood.

Following our visit, it was pouring down so we took the huge covered walkway to the Pavilion shopping centre and settled on lunch at an American ribs place. Expensive for Malaysia at $70 AUS but the serves were generous and enough for dinner later on as well. Not very traditional but filled the hunger spot!

Brett had a small beer.

We had a quick look around the shops. Guards stopped people from walking or sitting on the lovely grass.

There are lots of modern shops in the city centre.

And tea cup fountains.

As we were walking around, we were approached with a flyer for a fish spa and we thought why not? We went up some stairs into a lovely spa/massage shop, called Kinka Spar, where the boys had a great time. The fish gently nibbled our feet which tickled.

The spa was clean and modern and we found the whole experience relaxing and enjoyable. From that point on, J was continuously asking for a fish spa so it must have been good! The spas for the boys were free with our purchase, totalling $20 AUS for the family. We were keen to get back to the apartment as it was now late afternoon but wanted to come back another time to look more closely at the shops.
Tips

*Go to this fish spa! It was the most tranquil and professional that we came across in our Malaysia! Do it with kids, they will love it!

*Always carry an umbrella. The day starts sunny and hot and ends with a shower or pouring rain, especially when we visited in October.

*Our boys weren't too excited by the thought of going up in the towers. They were happy to look from the ground and then continue on to the aquarium.Glad we saved our money!

My plan is to make the boy version one day but I couldn't go past this fabric combination for a girl version.

This pattern is an easy and simple sew. I substituted the button holes with snaps and sewed the buttons on top just for looks.
I just may have picked up this pattern on the weekend. Vogue patterns were on sale and I couldn't resist! This pattern was awarded one of the best patterns of 2011 by PatternReview.com and has a long list of great reviews. Some versions included added sleeves and a tunic or blouse version. I think this will be an easy to sew, easy to wear dress and I love the Verily ready-to-wear version in a black and white print. Some style with a belt and a jacket. Another DKNY basic I look forward to adding to my wardrobe.

I've made Burda shorts 9793 a couple of times so far in my lifetime. It is a great boy short and easy to sew up. I highly recommend it. Some of the pattern reviews say the front pocket is too small but I think it is more for looks than for purpose.

This version uses fabric gifted to me by friends. The red fabric has been my stash for ages, just waiting for the right opportunity.
I used to believe that I could take a commercial pattern and apply it directly to my body. No wonder they never fit right - too big, too tight, gapey, not sitting properly. No wonder I found myself disappointed and frustrated and gave up.
Only recently when I decided to sew for myself once again that I investigated further and found that fact I had to alter the pattern to suit my unique, one-of-a-kind, not out-of-a-packet body. Yes, in this journey of self-discovery I have come to be very aware of my broad back, square shoulders (or are they sloping?), sway back and wide hips. And yes, there would be benefit in making a "muslin" version for fitting.
So for the first time EVER I made a muslin of a dress - the Parfait - and then fitted it to my body. I then cut it out from the better fabric and made this trial run. I love it! It perhaps needs a tweak here and there but unless someone points out something that would make it look even better, I think I'm right to run into the good fabric and make another.

I'm wondering though if perhaps I need an adjustment for a sway back?

This is a great summer dress and I totally love it with my new shoes ($8 from Target!).

Pattern Description: A versatile dress designed to be worn as either a sun dress or layered over a shirt or blouse as a pinafore style in cooler weather. Features a gathered bust and flattering curved midriff that fits snugly around the high waist. The straps and gathered pockets fasten with buttons. Skirt is a gently flared six-gore style. Closes with a side invisible zipper.

Pattern Sizing: 0-18

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions are quite detailed except for the zipper. It just says to sew it in "according to the manufacturer's instructions". Now I'm still new to invisible zippers, and being that there were no instructions that came with my zipper, I referred to the tutorial on the Colette website. I also did a bit of a google search and find some hints relating to sewing in a side zipper. One was to allow a bit of extra on the seam allowance on the top to create a little "house" for the zipper pull.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the heart-shaped neckline. I think it is really flattering for my figure, particularly as I'm smaller up top. I disliked the length of the skirt. I like a bit more on the length.

Fabric Used: Poplin, on sale from Lincraft. A thicker fabric would have been better as I wouldn't need to wear a slip with it but for the purposes of a trial run it was fine.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I made a size 10 up top and size 12 from the waist down. I also adjusted the sides in a touch at the underarm as it was gaping a little there. I didn't include the pockets as I thought this version would look better without them as it was already quite busy. I added 2 cm onto the hem and would do this again as I like the length. Next time I might add a bit more next time as for this version I hemmed used bias binding as I wanted as much length as I could get.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?: yes and yes. I already have the fabric ready for the next . I thionenk though the straps need to be a bit tighter as they slip a little. Also I'll add in a little extra (just a touch) on the waist as it is a bit too firm fitting there. It is wearable, but a little bit of ease would make it more comfortable.

Not set to finish with the ruffled bloomers, I made a pair of ruffled rompers. They look very cute and while I haven't seen what look like on, the photos here do not do them justice. I think that it adding snaps to the bottom to make nappy changes or toilet training easier for this size (size three) would be a good idea. Here's the link to a finished pair by the pattern designer Tie Dye Diva to give you an idea of the finished look.
I have been crafting; just the time has been shortened, especially as I have been feeling tired at night and knitting a few rows here and there is more appealing. Now also that I'm working full-time my crafting time will be especially tight. Before I changed working days, I was able to make this cute little ensemble for a work friend's little girl. The cuteness factor is huge!! It was also a change to fiddle and learn how to use my new overlocker which deserves a post of its own. The patterns were super easy, especially with doing the rolled hem on my overlocker and for extra cuteness I made a covered button for the back.
When I asked Karen a bit more about what her daughter liked, I was channelling Hannah Montanna which was a pretty scary experience! I guess that was what came to mind when Karen mentioned that Emelia loves clothes which she thinks older girls would wear.

I'd already flicked through my Ottobre magazines and had an idea of what I wanted to make.

I'll show some static shows but Karen has given me permission to share some "action" shots which are below all of the details.

The vest is from Ottobre 1/2008 and is called the "Juliet" vest. I had some fun hammering in the eyelets into the back. The embroidery is by Bunnycup Embroidery and I added some rhinestones which I used the iron to heat-set on. The thread is metallic.

I had some leftover fabric so I decided to make the Izzy and Ivy Jack and Jill hat. A bit fiddly but I'm sure I'd find it easier to sew the next time around. I wasn't happy with how the brim turned out (is a bit wonky) and I unpicked the band a couple of times to get the stripes a bit more even. I think it looks much better on than off and apparently Emelia loves it ALOT! I especially love the big flower and could see myself making these for embellishing other clothes.

For the pants I decided to tackle the knickerbockers also in Issue 1/2008. The instructions sounded deceptively simple (perhaps because they lacked the detail/pictures). But thanks to some help from the ladies at Crafty Mamas I got through it! The embroidery near the pocket is also from Bunnycup Embroidery with rhinestones added.

I also made a top for under the vest but in my sewing stupor I cut a size below what I should have (a 5/6 rather than a 7/8). I thought it would be ok going by the measurements but it ended up that the neck opening was too small which I am disappointed about. I suggest that if you are making this pattern to double-check this on the pattern before cutting.
Partly because I like little diagrams and in-depth instructions that I can follow to the rule, and secondly there were a few things about the bottom half that I'd never attempted (successfully) before. Even in my decades of sewing I've only tried a fly front once and that was a semi (that is, still wearable) disaster. So then when I go to work out how to do it this time, years and years later, I search the internet and find there are lots of different tutorials which show similar yet all different ways to do a fly front which ends up just confusing me more. Yes, I did pick one way and yes, next time I will do it differently. Finally, though it is finished and here is a sneak peek.
One of my favourite bits (from the top piece which is also Ottobre but quicker to sew)
I made this the other week for a little girl in a Secret Santa swap. A little birdie told me that something with ballerinas would be a hit so this bag instantly came to mind. The pattern is now available as a free download from Jodie Charlton (Ric Rac's blog).

It has been quite a while since I have unveiled a major finished item and this is the reason why. I have been concentrating on this wall hanging for the Doll's Quilt Swap on the Essential Baby forum for the past month (apart from a few little projects here and there).

My partner was Tina who requested a wall hanging for her little girl's room. The colours in the room are aqua and red and she was after something with a 'whimsy' feel, think "Alice in Wonderland".

I have such great sewing friends on EB and this lovely lady came to my rescue again with a bundle of aqua and red, including some fabrics which were exactly the same as quilt in Tina's daughter's room.

So I sketched out a design based on a pattern in a Homespun magazine then found this hand embroidery pattern which I happened to already have saved in my files.

Add some fabrics from Spotlight, a few from local quilt shops and some many nights doing the embroidery and she all came together.

But then I had no idea how to quilt it. Fortunately, another very talented EB quilter, Emma, saved me with a diagram and then I set forth to quilt.

There were so many things which were 'new' for me in the process. I'd never made pinwheels (aren't they a type of sandwich?) or pierced together my own patchwork design. I'd never binded a quilt and never made my own label.

But I still gave it a go, and even pierced together fabric to make the backing fabric.

I'm really pleased with how it all turned out. I think would look fantastic on a little girl's wall. Especially if you like aqua and red.

I challenged myself to make for two people in the swap. After all, it wasn't fair for one of our boys to receive and not the other? The second person I made for was Claire's little boy who is just a little bit younger than Jordan.

I made a pair of Oliver & S shorts and embroidered them with an applique and words in a car theme. The t-shirt was made using an Ottobre pattern and embellished with an applique. I finished off the outfit with a little vest, still going with the car theme.

Fabric: See I am using fabric from my stash!! Shorts made with denim from a Gardams sale purchased 2009. It had been folded for storage so had some fold marks in it which were only slightly noticeable but I couldn't remove them so I created more marks by distressing the fabric some more! I wanted to do some form of distressing anyway. I stitched some seams, then ran over them with sandpaper dipped in bleach, let them dry then unpicked the stitching.

Patterns: Oliver & S Sailbox pants size 12 - 18 months. I hadn't used this pattern before despite it being in my cupboard for a year. I found these easy to sew but next time would use a lighter weight denim as it was quite thick in parts. The fit is quite trim so if I was making these for Jordan I would increase them in the rise.

Shirt pattern: Ottobre 1/2008 I found the neck too tight so cut it lower either that or my tester Jordan has a big head. Made a little car applique which is appliqued onto cotton fabric first then straight-stitched to the shirt. I don't think this is my best effort, I don't like stretch sewing!! I don't think making a baby's t-shirt will be in my future again.
This year I sewed two outfits, one was for Lisa's little girl Ashley. Lisa has included a pic of the dress I made being worn, plus the photo from the Ottobre magazine on her blog Beetlehouse Designs. I also took a photo of the dress before it left but it was hard to photograph well.

The outfit is the Romantic Dress and underskirt from Ottobre Issue 3/2007. It was quite easy to make once I worked out how to sew it up as the instructions in Ottobre are quite basic and there are no pictures / diagrams to guide you as you go along. It has given me more confidence in sewing from the Ottobre magazine and I loved making something different to what I normally might sew.

The dress can be worn with the underskirt although I put an extra button down lower as I thought it could always be undone to let the underskirt show through.

A special thank you to Karen for her advise with button placement and the girls over at Crafty Mama's who gave me lots of help with my Ottobre questions!

And I can't forget Kaiden...about half-way through making the dress I realised the Kaiden and Lisa's little girl were very similar with their measurements. While Kaiden did think the dress was very pretty, there was only so many times I could bribe him with chocolate to try it on for size.

Pattern: Ottobre Romantic Dress and underskirt Issue 3/2007
Fabric: Lincraft purchased July 2010
Notions: Ribbon, lace trim from Lincraft. Most Mondays we head off to playgroup where Kaiden gets to spend time playing with his best friend Luke, while his Mummy (or Daddy) gets to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat and Jordan gets to crawl around and explore. At our last playgroup we received a visit from the local fire brigade who after giving a brief talk (as best you can to an audience of mostly two and three year-olds) then a quick departure to see to a fire, returned to show the kids their big red truck. The kids (and some of their parents)then had a go at using the hose which was lots of fun but a bit scary as there was alot of water coming out!Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14577791390653324770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6269453479128650017.post-46873770510407668962010-06-26T07:23:00.004+10:002012-07-09T20:53:51.155+10:0011 months
mmmm chocolate mousse!
And where did the last couple of months go? The last few have just flown by with 10 months seeing Jordan reach a few milestones including:
* second lot of two top teeth coming through
* clapping
* pointing
* waving

Now at 11 months he is looking more and more like a little boy.

* He loves to stand and uses EVERYTHING as a standing post, and especially loves using your leg if you stand still for more than 30 seconds.

* Is now in size one clothes. He can no longer squeeze into 0's. They are too short in the arms and legs.

* Is very determined..the tanties are starting already if he doesn't get his own way

* Still loves his big brother. Kaiden still calls him "his baby" or "baby Jordan". They just adore each other and love making each other laugh.

* Knows what food he likes. If you are eating something he thinks would be better (like chocolate mousse) he throws his food away and looks for some of yours.

* Is very clingy (or should that be cuddly?), more than what Kaiden ever was. He loves to be picked up and held.

* Is a fidget and can't sit still for a second.

* Hates being in his cot and stands up in their yelling and jumping up and down to be taken out.

* Is starting to have one, longer nap in the afternoon.Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14577791390653324770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6269453479128650017.post-1902121537115231202010-06-14T19:31:00.003+10:002012-07-09T20:56:07.360+10:00I must be crazy...for going camping in winter. But the boys (Brett, Kaiden, Jordan and Harry) had a ball, and to be honest, I had a good time too although I do prefer the warmer weather.

We used a playpen for camping only - handy when setting up/pulling down or when you need to keep a little one in safe place. Except this one tried to break out...

Kaiden and his buddy Luke played together all weekend, and even then we came home he asked if he could go over to his place.

It is also my first attempt at creating and using piping and inserting a magnetic snap. I don't know why I was worried about piping and snaps as they are very easy and there are lots of tutorials on the internet to help. This is a roomy bag and fully lined - also meeting Carolyn's challenge of the month - to make something lined. Despite the pattern missing a step in the instructions it is an easy-sew. The fabric is from Sewco. When I first saw this version I didn't really like it but now I have seen it sewn up I quite like this version of the bag.Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14577791390653324770noreply@blogger.com5
